Post Office in St Thomas National School

For the next few weeks we are going to learn about the Post Office.  Today we learned about the Journey of a Letter and all the items that can be bought in a Post Office - stamps, envelopes, dog licences, TV licences. We can also get passport forms and pay bills. We then played outside at Aistear. It was really good fun.

A Very Important Visitor has Arrived!

Guess who has arrived in our classroom?

Yes, Elfie is back! He is our most favourite Elf on the Shelf.

It is much earlier than usual but he must 'Elf-Quarantine until December 1st.  We are so happy to see him. He has even left us a note tellng us that he is going to keep an eye on us untile Christmas and tell Santa how well we are behaving.

Science on a Monday

This is Science Week. We did 2 experiments. First was the Skittles experiment.

Then we did a Walking Water Experiment. We used water, food dye and kitchen roll to do a really cool experiment.

We used 6 classes, pouring water into every 2nd one. We added food colouring to the 1st, 3rd and 5th glass. We folded a strip of kitchen towel and placed one end into the coloured water and the other into an empty glass. We saw the colour begin to move up the paper towel. Throughout the day we observed what happened. Before we went home the water had walked across the glasses! We all thought this was magic. It was in fact science at work. Capillary action caused the paper towel to pull the water up. The water kept travelling along the paper towel, across the bridge and into the next glass. Cool!

Look at the end result!!

Rainbow Rice

Our Rice has now dried out.  This is our last batch of 2 shades of red.  We mixed the colours to make rainbow rice. We used fool colouring to dye our rice.. We are going to use it for some fun activities like searching for our letter sounds or our Tricky Words.  Watch this space!

Autumn Autumn Everywhere

In the month of September we have focused on exploring and using vocabulary around the theme of Our School. We learned about who works in the school, our school rules and our new procedures during COVID-19. Our Junior Infants focused on mark-making and developing our fine motor skills for preparing to write. We have been learning to listen really well and are getting really good at our rhyming. Ms Nolan has been showing us how to do an oral report about our favourite animals. We describe what they look like, what they eat and where they live. In Gaeilge we have been learning Mé Féin and we can now say lots of new words in Irish. We are all so happy to be back together again.
